Puppy Information

Ears & Eye development:
Pups are born with their eyes and ear canals closeds . At one week old, puppies' eyes are still closed. Their eyes will begin to open in the second week of life, usually between 10 and 16 days of age, so at this point hearing continues to develop  till they have reached 4 weeks of age However, they won't be able to see clearly at first. The eyes will gradually open wider, revealing grayish-blue eyes with a hazy appearance. Puppies' eyes will continue to develop over the next several weeks, reaching full vision around eight weeks of age.
Puppies' ears begin to open around the time that the eyes do, generally around 12 to 14 days old. Their hearing will continue to develop until the puppies are around five weeks old.

During the first eight weeks of life, puppies are extremely dependent on their mother, because they need special care to grow healthy and strong. The mother will provide her puppies with the nutrition they need by nursing them until they are fully weaned and are less dependent on her to survive.
Over these crucial first few weeks, I worrying about mom laying on them or being pushed away from larger more aggressive eaters &    becoming weak due to no being able to nurse. SO therfore I rather hold    off on posting a lot of photos or letting anyone to choose till pups are 3- 4 weeks of age so no one will get their hopes up. Puppies grow out of infancy and learn to explore and play. They will begin to socialize with each other and with other members of their household once they're physically able to do so. From interacting with their littermates to humans, the period of four to seven weeks is the ideal time to introduce your puppy to my
household family members & Grandchildren and other dogs . Also    Sounds from Vaccum cleaners , Music , TV , and many other noises are introduced just be sure that the pup grows into an outgoing, friendly, and secure adult.
Newborn puppies cannot fully support their weight for the first two weeks of life, so they crawl around on their bellies, paddling and pushing with their legs and building strength. Most puppies will be able to rise up on their forelimbs around 5 to 6 days of age and will begin to use their hind legs around two weeks old. They usually begin to walk with a wobbly gait around 18 to 21 days of age .

Puppies need to be stimulated to urinate and defecate for the first several weeks of life. Mom does this by licking the anal and genital areas. If I am raising an orphaned pup or one that I am having to hand feed, I use a warm, damp cloth or cotton ball to stimulate the area. Puppies gradually develop the ability to urinate and defecate on their own around three to four weeks of age.

Puppies are born without   teeth. Their baby teeth, or "milk teeth" will begin to come in between three and four weeks of age and continue to develop until about eight weeks of age.

More info on  pups as they grow :
For newborn puppies, the first two weeks of life are all about sleeping and eating.     After 14 days of age, physical changes open up a whole new world. They begin to see, hear and walk. By the age of    21 days, they begin to explore the world and learn about being dogs. This is also when the   socialization process    begins. Puppies learn how to interact with other dogs by interacting with their mother and littermates. Human socialization with gentle handling is important at this time as well.
Around seven to eight weeks old, the first "fear period" will begin. This is a time when most puppies seem to be afraid of new things. Anything you can introduce them to before this time may help make the fear period go more smoothly. This is why I try to introduce them to different sounds ect . the only thing though  I usually do not do before pups leave is have them going outside on the grass due to protecting them against parvo as we do get wild animals on our property at night especially we have packs of coydogs surrounding us at night. One day we actually saw one of them in out driveway heading  up towards our  neighbors where they have chickens.  They creep me out..lol
I have high fences for my bostons to keep  coyotes and coy dogs out.  I do not allow my pups to be turned outside due to the wild animals.

More puppy info:
Baby teeth have erupted, around three weeks old, the puppies may be ready to begin weaning. Mom may naturally begin this process as she feels those puppy teeth nipping at her teats. A good way to transition the pups to dog food is to bring out some  softened puppy kibble (I use warm goats milk to soften the kibble). I use Purina Pro Plann puppy lamb and rice. I  first encourage them to eat it by offering a taste from my finger. As puppies get used to the puppy food, they will gradually nurse less and less. I also mix cooked food with their soft kibbles  and some raw meat. This really encourages them to gobble up their  food.    Most pups are fully weaned by six to eight weeks of age. .

More puppy info on Training and Socialization

Puppies between one to three weeks are still too young to respond to training or socialization. At three to four weeks, they are able to see, hear, walk, and urinate/defecate on their own. Though their brains are still developing, they are capable of learning some things.

Of course, it is still important for these young pups to remain with their mother and or littermates until eight    weeks of age. As early as three to four weeks of age, I can start to introduce the puppy pottys I bought on Amazon and start some basic   potty training with those  pottys. Even if the pups will be getting homes between eight to twelve weeks of age, I  can start laying the groundwork for training. Once the pups have gotten the hang of the puppy pottys I graduate them to a larger grid that goes over a tray with puppy pad  in it.

The time between four to seven weeks of age is an early socialization window. Although the puppy must remain with its mother, it is now ready to be exposed to new sights and sounds. It should start meeting people of all ages and appearances which I use my imediate family due to protecting my pups from catching anything. We pratice washng our hands before handling pups. This includes my grandchildren who know how to act around dogs and will handle the puppy gently only on the floor level. I never let them stand with pups or sit on furniture.

09/21/2023  WORD OF ADVICE for your new pups.

Please note that all our adult bostons Patellas have been examined...so all cleared .  So   please be coreful with your new puppy  ..I can't stress enough that no jumping off high places.   Jumping from high places can bear an extreme impact on the knees or can break their leg.  Also, Patellas may  become a problem if a puppy    jumps up and down repeatedly inside a playpen/fenced in area pounding on those knees. This being said, I had a vet explain to me that if both parents have clear patellas then if a puppy develops bad patellas it is most likely environmental hazards verses congenital  causes.

Also word of caution:

Brachycephalic breeds are easy to over heat which can be very life threatening situation! Even in the winter months  cannot be left out for any long periods. DO NOT leave our pups in vehicles!!

There is not much bridge on the nose of  Boston Terriers    to heat or cool the intake of air they breath, extreme cold and extreme hot can cause serious problems. Its best to be cautious and protective of your beloved Boston Terrier during these periods in extreme weather.

In the case your Boston Terrier gets over heated, the quickest way to get it cooled down is to pat rubbing alcohol onto the pads of its feet.

I advise all pet owners to have a pet health insurance for their babies. With the rising cost of living, our veterinarians are going to be forced to increase cost of services to stay in operation for us. It is a big investment  for these little guys.     AKC registry does offer each person a month free health insurance for trial when pups are registered. Whether our puppy buyers use AKC or not, we do advice everyone to latch onto a good policy for your fur babies. There is many other pet  insurance  companies.

All my pups receive their first booster vac between 7-8 weeks of age.
